Our goal for this article is to provide an overview of the physical, mental and spiritual causes of osteoarthritis that go beyond conventional thinking. Our hope is that it will help you understand the condition better, ultimately with the objective of getting to the root cause of the issue(s).
Whether you are someone diagnosed with arthritis, a supportive parent, or a curious seeker of holistic wellbeing and health, this information is designed to provide a thoughtful exploration and our hope is that it will help connect the dots to the different areas that require support when dealing with arthritis.
Arthritis is a broad term for conditions causing joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation, affecting people of all ages but most commonly older adults. The two main types are osteoarthritis (OA), which results from the breakdown of cartilage between joints, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks joint tissue. Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative joint disease, is the most common form of arthritis and is the leading cause of disability worldwide.
Common symptoms include joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. From a conventional perspective there is no cure, arthritis tends to be managed with medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes like exercise and weight management. These treatments aims to relieve pain, improve mobility, and prevent joint damage. In severe cases, surgery such as joint replacement may be required.
Oestoarthritis can often be traced back to the wear and tear that occurs when joints are subjected to excess strain over time. This strain can arise from various factors such as repetitive movements, improper posture, or engaging in high-impact activities without adequate support. Overloading the joints beyond their intended capacity leads to the breakdown of cartilage.
Obesity is a significant risk factor for developing arthritis, particularly in weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips. The excess weight places increased stress on these joints, accelerating the degenerative process of cartilage breakdown. Furthermore, adipose tissue, or fat cells, produce cytokines and other inflammatory substances that contribute to joint inflammation and deterioration. As such, maintaining a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and regular physical activity is crucial in mitigating the risk of arthritis.
Hormonal changes can influence the development of arthritis, particularly in women. Oestrogen, for example, plays a role in maintaining the integrity of cartilage and joint function. During menopause, when oestrogen levels decline, women may experience an increased risk of arthritis due to the loss of this protective effect. Additionally, hormonal imbalances associated with conditions such as thyroid disorders can disrupt the metabolism of bone and cartilage tissue, further predisposing individuals to arthritis. For example, Hypothyroidism increases the risk of oestoarthritis compared with age and sex matched population samples.
Simply put, the majority of hormones either directly or indirectly, affect connective tissue cells.
The typical western diet, characterised by excessive consumption of processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats, has been linked to chronic inflammation throughout the body. This systemic inflammation can exacerbate joint inflammation and contribute to the progression of arthritis. High levels of sugar and saturated fats in processed foods promote the release of pro-inflammatory molecules, which can damage cartilage and accelerate joint degeneration. Incorporating anti-inflammatory foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acids can help counteract the inflammatory effects of the Western diet and support joint health.
A deficiency in certain nutrients essential for joint health can increase the risk of arthritis. Key nutrients such as vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, collagen, and antioxidants play vital roles in maintaining the integrity of bones, cartilage, and connective tissues. Insufficient intake of these nutrients can impair the body’s ability to repair and regenerate damaged joint structures, predisposing individuals to arthritis and exacerbating its symptoms. Therefore, ensuring adequate dietary intake or supplementation of these nutrients is crucial in preserving joint health and preventing arthritis.
Nutrients requirements tend to differ for each individual and will be based on their whole body symptoms. Often therapeutic dosages through supplementation are recommended.
Certain medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and diabetes, can predispose individuals to osteoarthritis or exacerbate existing symptoms. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease characterised by chronic joint inflammation, can lead to secondary osteoarthritis due to the progressive damage inflicted on joint tissues. Similarly, gout, a form of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, can accelerate joint degeneration and increase the risk of osteoarthritis. Additionally, diabetes, particularly uncontrolled diabetes, is associated with metabolic abnormalities that can impair cartilage health and contribute to the development of osteoarthritis. Managing these underlying conditions effectively is essential in preventing or managing osteoarthritis in affected individuals.
If you are new to understanding the mind-body-soul connection and how our thoughts and emotions impact our physical health, then please read the following article we have created: Understanding the Mind-Body-Soul Connection and how it impacts health.
To provide a quick summary, the mental wellbeing of an individual plays a crucial role in the manifestation and progression of physical symptoms as the mind cannot be separated from the body. Mind, body and soul are one and the same system.
Understanding the emotional themes associated with arthritis is vital for getting to the deeper holistic root cause of the issue. This can often be due to traumatic experiences at any life stage, even going all the way back to being in the womb. These experiences are stored energetically in the body and subconscious mind.
Understanding the emotional causes and themes associated with arthritis is vital for getting to the deeper root cause of the issue.
Here’s a general overview of the themes:
Low self-worth is a deeply ingrained feeling of inadequacy and lack of value in oneself, which can permeate various aspects of life. Recognizing its manifestations is crucial in addressing this pervasive issue and embarking on a journey towards healing, self-love and self-acceptance.
Individuals with low self-worth often experience a sense of defeat, feeling overwhelmed by life’s challenges and unable to muster the resilience to overcome them. This defeatist attitude reinforces feelings of inadequacy and perpetuates the cycle of low self-esteem.
Imagine someone who applies for a promotion at work but doesn’t get it. Despite putting in their best effort, they feel defeated and believe they’re not good enough to advance in their career. This experience reinforces their low self-worth, making them doubt their abilities and value.
Those struggling with low self-worth may engage in self-punishment for perceived mistakes or shortcomings. This self-punishment only serves to reinforce negative beliefs about oneself, deepening the cycle of self-doubt and worthlessness.
Consider a student who receives a lower grade than expected on an exam. Instead of acknowledging that everyone makes mistakes, they harshly criticise themselves, calling themselves names and dwelling on their perceived incompetence. This self-punishment only serves to deepen their sense of worthlessness.
Individuals with low self-worth may frequently experience feelings of humiliation or degradation, whether real or perceived. These experiences further chip away at their self-esteem, leaving them feeling diminished and unworthy.
Picture a person who is publicly criticised by their boss during a team meeting. Even though the criticism may not be warranted or constructive, they feel humiliated and degraded in front of their colleagues. This experience chips away at their self-esteem, leaving them feeling diminished and unworthy.
Low self-worth often manifests in an inability to handle pressure or stress effectively. Individuals may doubt their ability to cope with challenges, leading to avoidance or maladaptive coping strategies that perpetuate feelings of inadequacy.
Think about an individual who struggles to meet deadlines at work. Despite their best efforts, they feel overwhelmed by the pressure and stress, believing they’re incapable of handling the demands of their job. This inability to cope further reinforces their low self-worth, as they see themselves as incompetent or inadequate.
When looking at the emotional themes from a metaphysical perspective the location of the pain and inflammation is key. Whether it is on one side of the body versus the other will mean it has a different emotional theme. Additionally, if it is located in the hands versus the feet or knees, it will also have a different emotional theme and meaning.
This is beyond the scope of this article as each individual presents differently and will have varied themes, work with us to find out more.
