As Holistic Mind-Body-Soul Therapists, we look for the root causes of health on the physical, mental and spiritual levels. Using our own unique healing methodology, we assist our clients back to health and wellbeing.

Our goal for this article is to provide an overview of the physical, mental and spiritual causes of hypothyroidism that go beyond conventional thinking. Our hope is that it will help you understand the condition better, ultimately with the objective of getting to the root cause of the issue(s).

Whether you are someone diagnosed with hypothyroidism, a supportive parent, friend or relative, or a curious seeker of holistic wellbeing and health, this information is designed to provide a thoughtful exploration and our hope is that it will help connect the dots to the different areas that require support when dealing with hypothyroidism.

Introduction to Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid, is a common endocrine disorder characterised by the insufficient production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. These hormones—primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)—play a critical role in regulating metabolism, energy levels, and overall bodily functions. When the thyroid gland does not produce enough of these hormones, it can lead to a slowing down of various physiological processes.

The causes of hypothyroidism can vary widely and include autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland. Other causes may include certain medications, radiation therapy, thyroid surgery, or iodine deficiency.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism can be subtle and develop gradually, often leading to a delay in diagnosis. Common signs include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, and depression. Additionally, some individuals may experience swelling in the face, particularly around the eyes, and a hoarse voice.

Diagnosing hypothyroidism typically involves blood tests that measure levels of thyroid hormones and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Treatment often includes hormone replacement therapy, which can help restore hormone levels to normal and alleviate symptoms, allowing individuals to lead healthier, more active lives.

Physical Causes of PCOS

Iodine Deficiency

Iodine deficiency is a common physical cause of hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland relies on iodine to produce thyroid hormones, and when iodine intake is insufficient, the thyroid cannot synthesise enough of these hormones, leading to an underactive thyroid. This can slow metabolism, causing symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance. Iodine deficiency is more prevalent in areas where soil and food sources contain low iodine levels, though it is less common in countries where iodised salt is used regularly.

Low Levels of Other Key Vitamins and Minerals

Deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals can contribute to the development of hypothyroidism. Nutrients such as selenium, zinc, and vitamins D and B12 are crucial for maintaining optimal thyroid function. Selenium plays a vital role in the conversion of the inactive thyroid hormone (T4) into its active form (T3), while zinc is important for hormone synthesis and regulation. Low levels of vitamin D have also been linked to autoimmune thyroid disorders and may negatively impact overall thyroid health. Additionally, vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to symptoms similar to those of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue and weakness. Ensuring adequate intake of these key nutrients through diet or supplementation may help support thyroid function and prevent the onset of hypothyroidism.

Imbalanced Gut Microbiome

When the production of stomach acid and digestive enzymes is inadequate, or when the gut lining is compromised (a condition often referred to as “leaky gut”), the absorption of essential nutrients for thyroid health is significantly hindered. Furthermore, a healthy gut microbiome is responsible for converting 20% of the body’s T3, so any dysbiosis in the gut can impair the conversion of thyroid hormones into their active form.

Neurotransmitter Imbalances

Deficiencies in serotonin and/or dopamine can impair the communication between the hypothalamus and the thyroid gland, resulting in decreased production of thyroid hormones.

Medications

Certain medications can induce hypothyroidism by interfering with thyroid hormone production or function. Drugs such as lithium (used to treat bipolar disorder), amiodarone (used for heart arrhythmias), and some cancer treatments can reduce thyroid hormone levels, leading to an underactive thyroid. For individuals taking these medications, thyroid function needs to be closely monitored to prevent or manage the onset of hypothyroidism.

Other Health Conditions – Autoimmune, Diabetes

Several other health conditions can contribute to the development of hypothyroidism. Autoimmune diseases, such as Type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, are often associated with thyroid dysfunction due to the body’s immune system attacking multiple endocrine glands. Conditions like Down syndrome and Turner syndrome have also been linked to higher rates of hypothyroidism. Furthermore, chronic illnesses such as viral infections, hepatitis, or even certain types of cancer can affect the thyroid gland’s function, leading to an underactive thyroid. Managing these underlying health conditions is crucial, as they can complicate thyroid function and require careful monitoring to prevent or treat hypothyroidism effectively.

Emotional Causes and Themes of PCOS

If you are new to understanding the mind-body-soul connection and how our thoughts and emotions impact our physical health, then please read the following article we have created: Understanding the Mind-Body-Soul Connection and how it impacts health

To provide a quick summary, the mental wellbeing of an individual plays a crucial role in the manifestation and progression of physical symptoms as the mind cannot be separated from the body. Mind, body and soul are one and the same system.

Understanding the emotional themes associated with hypothyroidism is vital for getting to the deeper holistic root cause of the issue. This can often be due to significant life events at any life stage, even going all the way back to being in the womb. These experiences are stored energetically in the body and subconscious mind.

Understanding the emotional causes and themes associated with hypothyroidism is vital for getting to the deeper root cause of the issue.

Here’s a general overview of the themes:

1. Not being able to grasp something (Not fast enough)

Encountering a situation where you struggle to grasp a concept or idea can create a profound internal conflict. This struggle often manifests as a mix of frustration, confusion, and self-doubt. When faced with something elusive—be it a complex theory, a challenging task, or an emotional situation—it can feel as though you are standing at a barrier, eager to move forward but unable to find the key to unlock the door.

This conflict can lead to a range of emotional responses. For instance, frustration may arise from repeated attempts to understand something that remains just out of reach. This can result in feelings of inadequacy, especially in environments that place a high value on understanding and competence. You might start questioning your abilities, wondering if the inability to grasp the concept reflects a deeper flaw in your intelligence or skills.

2. Not being able to get rid of something (Being too slow)

Struggling to rid oneself of a burden—whether it’s a habit, an emotion, or a situation—can create a deep-seated internal conflict, particularly when one feels that they are moving too slowly in the process. This sense of slowness can breed feelings of frustration, helplessness, and even shame. In a world that often values speed and efficiency, the experience of being unable to quickly release something can feel isolating and burdensome.

The conflict arises when the individual grapples with the desire to move on versus the reality of their progress. They may recognise that holding onto certain things—such as past traumas, unproductive habits, or toxic relationships—hinders their growth and happiness. However, despite this awareness, they find themselves stuck in a cycle of inertia. The more they try to push themselves to let go, the more entrenched they may feel, leading to a sense of defeat and self-criticism.

This perception of slowness can also lead to comparisons with others, intensifying feelings of inadequacy. Observing peers who seem to move effortlessly through similar challenges can amplify the belief that something is inherently wrong with one’s own pace.

Spiritual Causes and Themes of Hypothyroidism

(If you are coming directly to this section of the blog looking for the emotional themes connected to Hypothyroidism, please read the previous section)

Embracing spirituality or connecting with your higher self can be the most powerful healer of all. From a spiritual perspective, feeling disconnected to a higher power whether that be God, the Universe, All That Is, the Divine, or to your higher self, is considered to be at the root of ill-health.

Connecting to the high vibrational energy of your spiritual truth can immediately start the healing process within an individual and often be transformative in many situations.

Illness as a Teacher – Developing Virtues

Viewing hypothyroidism as a potential teacher, individuals may find spiritual meaning in the lessons and opportunities for why this health condition arose.

Based on the emotional themes of hypothyroidism, this mostly likely revolves around aspects such as discovering how to develop patience, self-acceptance, self-compassion and kindness, trusting your own intuition, developing self-confidence and self-worth,

Remember, there is no separation between the body, mind and the soul, they are all connected, and are reflections of each other. As a perspective shift, try to think of the body as simply the densest reflection of the soul.

Adopting the perspective that considers the body as a messenger, conveying insights and reflections from the spiritual realm helps you to discover your own inner truth which is incredibly powerful and healing.
